NCHS 2009 Deer Hunt @ Caldwell Community

This past Thursday, Friday and Saturday, Nov 19-21, I participated with the NC Handicapped Sportsmen (NCHS) in a deer hunt hosted by the Caldwell Community Hunt Club. Caldwell is a small farming community located just a little north of Chapel Hill in Orange County NC,. The hunt was set up to allow sportsmen with disabilities to enjoy the opportunities that most of us take for granted. Participants included several children whose medical challenges brought tears to your eyes. Several soldiers and marines from the Wounded Warrior units at Ft Bragg and Camp Ljeune were also on hand. Although my advanced age and assorted medical conditions qualified me to participate as a disabled hunter, I volunteered to act as companion or mentor to one of the Wounded Warriors who had never been hunting before.

The hunt started out at a little after noon on Thursday at the Caldwell Community Center with a "meet
and greet" followed by a safety briefing.

I can't say enough good things about the folks associated with organizing and hosting this hunt. They had it planned down to the smallest detail. I told my hunting companion we were being spoiled and not to expect that hunting on his own would be this easy.

The first afternoon my companion and I were guided to a ground blind which had been placed in a field which sloped to the woods where we were assured deer would emerge about an hour before dark. We stowed our gear and I snapped a photo of my companion Chris just before we loaded his gun and settled in.

We had not much more then grown accustomed to our surroundings when we observed three deer walking just inside the tree line. They only gave us a quick look but I think the first one was a doe with a buck right behind her. The third one, probably another buck, followed the same path with it's nose to the ground about 15 minutes later.

At 4:05 a doe came out of the woods from a little draw. She offered a shooting opportunity but I cautioned my companion to wait to see what might be following her. She soon stepped into the woods on the left side of the opening but was replaced by another doe which stared up the hill at our blind. I had previously marked the spot where she stood at 92 yards and my companion said he had qualified "expert" on the rifle range so we got ready for when she might offer a broadside shot. In less then 30 seconds the first doe, which was the bigger of the two, returned to the opening and started to nibble on some corn which had been placed there the day before by our hosts. I whispered "go ahead but take your time" and placed my hands over my ears. At the roar of the borrowed .243 the deer lurched to one side and plunged into the brush. Here is the face of a very pleased hunter after taking what we both believed to be a very good shot at his first deer.

We had been admonished not to leave our blinds until picked up by our guides, so we reloaded the gun and waited to see what else might show up. Unfortunately nothing did but we were pleased nevertheless. Our guide arrived just before dark and we were able to locate a very nice doe which had run about 75 yards from point of impact. We were met by members of the Caldwell Hunt Club at a very well equipped skinning shed adjacent to the Caldwell Community Center. These folks made short work of 7-8 deer which were harvested by our group on the first afternoon of the hunt. Once all the deer were quartered and on ice we were treated to a genuine "pig picking" - Man, were we spoiled.

Friday morning the entire crew came up with a big fat zero. A few deer were spotted but nothing offered a shot. Because Cris and I were fairly mobile we were offered the option to move into an un-harvested soybean field which was isolated due to recent rains making the road impassable. - we would have to walk in. There was a ladder stand and an opportunity for placing a climbing stand nearby. After a little consultation about safe gun handling and waiting for a good shot we decided to go for it. I did not see a thing but just before dark Cris shot what we both initially thought was a fair size doe but turned out to be a button buck. It was a long drag out of there, but with the help of the guides who came to pick us up, we got it back to the truck without the aid of a 4 wheeler.

The highlight of the Friday afternoon hunt was an 8 point buck shot by this young man. I didn't get any photos of the actual hunt but I expect you will be seeing them on websites and in the regional newspapers and magazines. It went down something like this: The young fellow and his dad are placed in a ground blind overlooking a likely spot. They are accompanied by Tony Robinson who is a retired NCWRC Wildlife Officer and now outdoor columnist for several publications. Tony straps the young man's gun onto a platform just in front of his wheelchair. The gun can be moved by a joy stick very similar to the one on the wheelchair. The gun is lined up on target by looking into a small closed circuit TV screen. When they have things all lined up a tube similar to a sipping straw is placed in the young man's mouth. A gentle suction on the tube fires the gun. The trick is to do all of this while dealing with a wild animal and the blood pumping adrenalin of your hunter. The smile tells the rest of the story.

This young fellow did not get a shot but he did see several deer and he was a delight to have around. The good Lord willing he will be back to give it a try again next year. He is flanked by two members of the Caldwell Community who helped place him and his dad on stand every day.

My hunting companion Chris won a CVA muzzleloader for shooting the biggest doe (97.4 pounds). He ended up with two deer and lots of stories. I expect he now has the hunting bug and will be in the woods on his own soon. NCHS Chairman Ed Mays (left), made the presentation. Ralph Colman (center), landowner and guide helps Chris display his prize.

I believe this gentleman on the left kept us in food. I am terrible with names but saw him in the kitchen a lot so assume he was the "chief cook & bottle washer. He was presented a knife from the NCHS. He was assisted by many others, all of whom received a loud round of applause and a thank you handshake from all the participants.

The Marines upstaged the Army by donating a KBAR knife which was won by one of our guides. I'm thinking next year if I'm involved, we may be able solicit a certificate for a tandem parachute jump from the Army's Golden Knights. We'll see how many of the our guides line up for that one. <IMG class=smiley title=Evil border=0 alt=">:D" src="http://www.brfff.com/forum/Smileys/classic/evil.gif">

And so ends the 2009 NCHS Caldwell Community Hunt. Great people and a great time. I think we shot about 20 deer. A few bucks but an awful lot of does which is what the community wanted us to do because a large herd of does can be devastating when youre a farmer trying to grow a crop corn or soy beans

Forum: Hunting

Doubles

Got up early to make a two hour drive where a buddy gives me access to an urban honey hole. His property sits on a funnel between two remaining tracks of woods which have not yet yet been subdivided into building lots. If you sit there long enough the deer which live in these last remaining woods but feast on shrubs, flowers and lawns during the night will move through the narrow funnel as they traverse between woodlots. Back when the entire area was one big woods we used to hunt it with guns but that was several years ago. Now it is a prime spot for low profile entry and exit with archery gear.

This morning a family group of does walked by my stand at 7:15. Their path put them almost under my stand which made for a very steep shot. I was about to pass on the shot and hope to catch them on the other side after they had gone by when the largest of the group stepped off the trail and offered more of her shoulder and rib cage. The "twang" of my TenPoint Phantom CLS crossbow sent a NAP Spitfire down through her vitals with a complete pass through and into the ground. They all turned tail and ran back down the trail with "big mamma" spewing blood as she brought up the rear.

It was early and I knew I should wait at least 30 minutes before taking up the trail so I used my ACU Draw to re-cock my crossbow just in case anything came along while I enjoyed a cup of thermos poured coffee while I reflected on all that was right with the world. Before the 30 minutes were up or the cup off coffee gone I spied three more deer coming on a slightly different path which would take them well with in range and at a better angle for a good shot. We can shoot two a day in NC and I had unfilled tags and folks whom I had promised venison so I thought "make meat while the making is good". When the lead doe which also appeared to be the largest one came broadside my Phantom made it's muted "twang" for the second time today and another Spitfire was on the way. This deer jumped, ran about ten yards, stopped and looked back as if looking at what had just stung her. She then started a staggering walk and fell over dead.

Down my tree I came. Assembled my gear, retrieved two blood soaked arrows and proceeded to skid the latest deer to the back corner of my buddies lawn. I then followed a very well marked blood trail to the first deer which had gone about 100 yards before expiring.

As most of you hunters know the fun part of the hunt was over and the work had just begun. Work yes, but I prefer to think of it as a labor of love. For sure none of these deer will go to waste and who knows I may have even saved a flower bed or azalea plant or two.

Forum: Hunting

The Bedding Ridge

A friend allows me to hunt his property which butts up against a golf course. They have a "deer problem" which is apparent when you drive through the neighborhood and see many shrubs surrounded by mesh wire fencing. There is also a visible "browse line" in the neighboring woods. As you might expect this is, and should be a bow hunting only area, for those fortunate to have access.

I may have finally figured out a prime spot. The last few deer I have taken from this area have come off a ridge which breaks sharply off one side and gently slopes to the golf course on the other. By sitting the at the top and just beyond the sharp edge of the ridge I've had several deer pop up over the edge, look around and then promptly fold their legs and bed down. Two weeks ago one was within range and I pinned her to the ground where she bedded. Last Wednesday one bedded out of range but eventually got to her feet and fed towards me. I almost lost her when I passed up a 35 yard shot and she got behind some brush. Thankfully she turned around and came back offering a 25 yard broad side shot. At the "twang" of my TenPoint Phantom crossbow she mule kicked and ran down the slope to collapse along a path which made retrieval with my two wheel deer cart very easy.

You have got to love these urban hunting situations which are made possible by the quietness of archery equipment and the kindness of good friends.

Forum: Hunting

Salmon River NY, 19-22 Oct 09

Took a break from sitting in a tree stand waiting for a deer to walk by to do a little steelhead and salmon fishing in upstate New York along the Salmon River (Pulaski NY area)

As many of you know, timing is everything in fishing for migratory fish such as salmon and steelhead. It turns out that we were there a couple weeks late or a couple weeks early depending on which fish we were targeting. The main run of salmon up the Salmon River was in mid to late September and the steelhead were just beginning to trickle in when we fished from October 19th to the 22nd. We caught fish, but could have done better but we were locked in to a very nice cabin owned by the Douglson Salmon Run folks for that period.

I go with a group of guys who love to fish but we also enjoy each others company. Just getting together is great. Catching lots of fish is nice but optional. A highlight of each day was a huge breakfast cooked by one of our "chef's" (I helped with dishes - They wouldn't eat my cooking)

Our cabin gave us access to the lower end of Douglason Salmon Run which separated us from the majority of other fishermen unless they made a long walk and made a "iffy" crossing of the river which was running at 750cfs. We were at the beginning of the wade fishing water as it came out of Lake Ontario which meant we go first shot at the fresh fish. Great looking salmon and steelhead water.

As previously mentioned, our timing was off. There were a few King Salmon in the river and the Steelhead had just began to come in, nevertheless we all caught a few fish. First to score was my buddy Steve who has a way of catching fish when everyone else is singing the blues.

Big John was having some mobility problems with a bum hip but it did not keep him from making the trip. He said that catching this nice steelhead was better then getting a cortisone shot.

I could not let these folks get ahead of me. (Steve did out fished me but I came in 2nd) I also caught the biggest fish (not this one) but it was late in the evening and a long way back to the vehicle so it is still there for anyone who cares to try for it.

This group has been going to the Salmon River for almost 20 years and we are thinking about changing venues. Not sure where yet, but for sure we need to rethink our timing. One thing is for sure, we will continue to fish together. As I told the guys, "I don't come for the fishing. I come for the entertainment of being with you clowns who are also very good friends"

Forum: Fly Fishing

Wounded Warriors & NCHS @ NCWRC Pechmann Center 10-14-09

Rain did not deter about 25 folks from participating in the Wounded Warrior and NC Handicapped Sportsmen fishing event at the NCWRC John E. Pechmann Fishing Education Center on October 14, 2009. We reserve the second Wednesday of each month to honor the sacrifices these folks have made so that we can enjoy all the freedoms that this great country offers. These programs are open to all military personnel and their families as well as NCHS members. The Pechmann Center provides the venue and volunteers run the program.

About half the folks at today's event took a look at the weather and elected to participate in hands on instruction into the art of fly tying. We have been told by medical personnel that this type of hobby is very good for those with brain injuries or stress related issues.

It rained pretty steady but we had several individuals and families who wanted an opportunity to go fishing. Some used fly rods while others used spin cast gear. All caught fish and all had a ball. I heard the young fellow on the bottom right of this photo say "That's number ten"

This WW family proudly displays some of their thread and feather creations. (I heard talk about a fly tying kit for Christmas), Volunteer fly tying instructor John Smith on the right.

We are suspending the WW & NCHS events for November and December because of the holidays and our ponds are cooling down which adversely affects the warm water fish metabolism and therefore reduces their feeding activity. We will stock trout (cold water fish) in two of our ponds in mid December in preparation for our annual series of fly fishing clinics. These trout will be available for the Wounded Warrior & NCHS events which will resume the 2nd Wednesday of the month in January - January 13, 2010

Forum: Fresh Water Fishing

Collected some more deer hair...........

Collected some more deer hair a couple days ago.

I was beginning to wonder about my deer hunting skills as I had not had a deer sighting in several sits at some prime spots both in NC and VA. It appears the mast crop is not that great at my VA hunting site and the deer that were around all summer have gone elsewhere for their groceries. On Wednesday afternoon I changed venues by going to a friends place which butts right up against a golf course. This is in a "no-gun hunting area" so it normally holds lots of deer - That is unless the golf course obtains a "culling permit" which has happened in the past.

I took a walk to survey for sign before deciding exactly were to hunt and was disappointed to see very little recent sign. I eventually decided to try an oak ridge which drops off gently on one side towards the golf course and sharply on the other towards a section of forest which separates some upscale housing. There were a couple deer paths traversing the area and faint sign of deer rummaging through the leaves in hopes of finding a sparse crop of acorns.

I jacked my climber up a pine tree, checked the wind with some of duff from a milk weed and settled in with my latest book to see what would happen. (Yes, I'm a reader on stand. I read a paragraph, place my finger on the spot and slowly look around. If I don't see anything, which is usually the case, I go back to reading. I go through several paperback westerners or historical novels during the course of the season) - I had just got to the part where Chief Red Cloud told newly appointed Indian Agent McGillcuddy that his band would not work to help grow any food and that it was the white mans responsibility to provide for them when a big doe stepped up over the steep side of the ridge.

Chief Red Cloud may have been willing to wait for someone to provide his food but I knew if I wanted venison I'd have to kill and process it myself. With that in mind, I slowly slipped Red Cloud and McGillcuddy into my pack and picked up my trusty TenPoint Phantom Crossbow. I had previously used my rangefinder to determine prominent landmarks which would serve as references should a deer appear and this deer, which was partially obscured by some brush, was just about to pass a 27 yard waypoint. It stepped into the open and as I was about to shoot, it promptly folded it's front legs and bedded right there in front of me.

A "what the heck" instantly came to mind. I then saw that it's vitals were well exposed so took careful aim and fired. Due to my elevated angle the bolt entered the near side, drove downward to the opposite side and pinned the deer to the ground. It broke free and tried to jump up but could not gain its feet. The NAP Spitfire mechanical broadhead stuck out one side and the fletching the other. There was a little thrashing and then it was all over. I retrieved my arrow or bolt which was still in good shape by unscrewing the broadhead and pulling from the fleching side. The blades on the broadhead will need replacing but that is easy to do with a jewelers screwdriver.

This all happened at about 4pm with lots of daylight remaining. I was so excited that I totally forgot to take a photo until I had the deer up on the skinning gimble and that does not make for a very interesting picture. I had it all cleaned, quartered and on ice before the sun went down. It does not get much better then that.

Forum: Hunting

Collected some deer hair today..........

I collected some deer hair today - should make up into great bucktails and serve as substitute for elk hair caddis flies.

I'm a reader while sitting on deer stand so pulled a western out early and was just getting into it when I looked up and saw a big doe less then 20 yards away starring right at me. I slowly slipped the book back into my pack closed my hands around my TenPoint Phantom CLS crossbow but did not dare make another move.

I then saw another deer which was closer and walking to my left front. Knowing I was about to be "busted" , I slowly raised the crossbow to my shoulder, found the sweet spot right behind the closest deer's shoulder and squeezed the trigger. At the "twang" the deer did a "mule kick" and ran behind my stand. I was able to follow it and saw it stop, look back and then it's legs gave out from underneath it.

I quickly turned my attention to the original deer which I had thought was "on to me" and saw that it and a third deer were standing broadside less then 20 yards in front of my stand. I thought of pulling my ACU Draw crank out and trying to silently cock my crossbow for a "two-fer" but knowing I already had one nice size doe on the ground I just watched them until they stiff legged it out of there. You can bet I will be back there sometime next week.

Forum: Archery

Shot an 8pt this morning

Bow hunting started in NC last Saturday. I was out there but did not see a thing. It is still pretty warm here and I look at the first couple of weeks of bow season as a dress rehearsal for what is coming - It gives me a good chance to make sure all my gear is working and allows me to slowly get into the swing of what has been a passion for several years now.

One of the properties where I have permission to hunt is a small plot which is surrounded by dog hunting clubs. I figure the most effective way to entice a deer to pass by is to put out a little corn which is perfectly legal here in NC. I have been putting corn out for the past month and it has been disappearing. I finally placed a camera there to check just how big the buck was that was eating all my corn. I pulled the card on opening day and here is what I found. (These folks can go through a lot of corn)

I don't think my wife needs a raccoon coat so this morning (Monday) I decided to make a two hour drive to a friends property that is surrounded by houses with just enough woods in between to allow the deer to thrive in what can be called a urban environment. This is strictly an archery hunting area. I have hunted there with very good success in the past. I arrived about 45 minutes before shooting light and headed for my favorite tree which was marked with "bright eyes" from last year. Much to my surprise I found that a big tree had blown over sometime during the summer and it's top was surrounding "my tree". After a little recon in the dark I found a path that led to another area where I had previously had success. Up a previously marked tree I went with my trusty TenPoint Phantom CLS Crossbow. With an arrow firmly in place I waited for first light.

Shooting light around here occurs at about 6:45. That came and went and by 8 o'clock I was beginning to question my sanity for making a long drive. I also began having second thought about hunting in warm weather - (90 degrees forecast for the high today). Just as I was thinking about pouring a cup of coffee from my ever present thermos, I saw two deer just out of range. I eased the safety off my TenPoint and got ready. They were at the far end of my 35 yard self imposed limit for taking a shot. They milled around and then turned back and went the other way. I then began to berate myself for not taking a shot when the biggest one monetarily offered herself broadside. Oh well,- I was just happy to have seen them.

About a half hour later I observed another deer coming down a path which would bring her along side my stand. Once again I eased off the safety and kept a watchful eye. This deer soon materialized into a second and then a third and finally a fourth deer. They all appeared to be mature does. The shot would be off my right side but I could make it by twisting around in my climbing stand. They were still not within range and were wandering around but were slowly but surely moving my way.

Just as I was about to make the move on the lead doe I glanced to my left and saw a big deer in about the same spot the first two deer had been earlier. It did not take me long to see that this deer was much larger then any of the does to my right front. I slowly swung my crossbow to the left. This deer lowered his head and revealed a nice set of horns. I was monetarily torn between shooting one of the does or trying for the buck. The buck won out and when he took a few more steps, which placed him broadside at 32 yards, I sent a 100 grain NAP Spitfire mechanical broadhead into his vitals. Due to the angle, my shot went into his near side lung and lodged into the bone of his far shoulder. There was enough kinetic energy to knock him down. He rolled once but was unable to gain his feet. It was all over in a matter of minutes

He turned out to be a basket rack 8 point. Not a spectacular set of antlers but a pretty heavy body. His rack was still in velvet which is a first for me. The velvet was swiveled and dry and would have probably been rubbed off within the next few days. I am pleased, this is a good way to start the 2009 hunting season. Pressure is off now.

Forum: Archery

Wounded Warriors & NCHS @ NCWRC Pechmann Center 9-9-09

The NCWRC Pechmann Fishing Education Center hosted the Wounded Warrior & NC Handicapped Sportsmen for some fishing and fly tying this past Wednesday, September 8, 2009. This is a military appreciation event which occurs from 1-5pm the 2nd Wednesday of each month.

We usually have a good turn out of kids but turn out was sparse due to the majority of being back in school. One family came with their pre-school children and then left to meet the older kid's bus and returned for more fishing fun.

This young fellow was just watching his sister today but I bet he will be ready to catch one on his own next year.

Several of the NCHS have found a new hobby which is highly addictive. Several times I heard the expression "I like this. Yes sir, I really like this fly tying"

It became really sweet when this fellow caught about a dozen bream on the fly he had personally tied.

This young lady was all for catching but she was not about to touch "that slimy old fish"

One of our volunteers caught a nice bass with a fly he had tied during the tying session.

Lots of smiles today.

Our next Wounded Warrior / NCHS fishing event will be Wednesday, October 14, 2009 from 1-5pm

Forum: Fresh Water Fishing
