Reply with quote | #1 | Ok guys/gals.... I got a few extra dollars and want to buy a new rifle. I've got a couple of Leupold 3 X 9 scopes I can choose from to put on top. I have 2 rifles now. I have an 30:06 Remington 700 BDL and a Savage .243 that I use for varmint hunting. The 06 I use mostly for deer.
I have a daughter that lives outside of Fairbanks, Alaska and I'm going up there in October to try my hand at Caribou hunting. My son-in-law says the 06 will do the job but I'd like something with a little more "UMPHH"... So I'm thinking 300 Win Mag or 7MM Mag. I'd also like it either in a Browning A-bolt or Ruger Model 77. I was also thinking about the 338 Federal ...
What do y'all think? Give me some ideas because time's growing short. I've only got a month to buy it, mount the scope and sight it in. Also, just to get used to shooting it, I've got to shoot a few boxes of bullets through it before I go. __________________ ...RUN FAST ... BARK LOUD! ... |

Reply with quote | #2 | I love the .300 Win Mag. I have a Thompson Center Encore ProHunter. I have the muzzle loading barrel for it and a .300 Win Mag Barrel. It is a bull Barrel, floated, and fluted. It is single shot, but lightening doesn't have to strike twice... Besides, it is so easy to reload (I wear a belt with extra cartridges on it), I shot 3 shots and hit three targets (the second two on the move) and my wife could not believe she was hearing a single-shot rifle. I use pointed soft points... Corelokts. They do not leave a catastrophic wound cavity (like a .308 hollow point would). Entranc and exit hole with minimal damage. Ballistically, the .300 win mag is amazing. In fact, Special Forces have already begun transitioning from .308 for their snipers to .300 Win Mag.
Some folks say it is overkill, but I trust I can make a 200 yard shot, in the wind, and place my round where I want it. This allows "behind the ear" shots on hogs at range, but also retains enough weight and energy to impact the shoulder plate and not fragment.
As far as recoil, it isn't an issue with the Encore (great recoil reduction system). I had at one point thought about proting the barrel, but there really isn't enough muzzle-flip to really need too. Besides, do I want ALL that noise coming back at me!!?? On the sending end, the percussion if fairly quite (mainly due to the awesome construction of the barrel). On the other end, however, I think the sound may actually cause time to stand still and inflict traumatic brain injury to the target from the concussion! It is LOUD. Folks on the other side of the forrest know you made a shot! But, like I said, lightening doesn't have to strike twice!
