I collected some deer hair today - should make up into great bucktails and serve as substitute for elk hair caddis flies.
I'm a reader while sitting on deer stand so pulled a western out early and was just getting into it when I looked up and saw a big doe less then 20 yards away starring right at me. I slowly slipped the book back into my pack closed my hands around my TenPoint Phantom CLS crossbow but did not dare make another move.
I then saw another deer which was closer and walking to my left front. Knowing I was about to be "busted" , I slowly raised the crossbow to my shoulder, found the sweet spot right behind the closest deer's shoulder and squeezed the trigger. At the "twang" the deer did a "mule kick" and ran behind my stand. I was able to follow it and saw it stop, look back and then it's legs gave out from underneath it.
I quickly turned my attention to the original deer which I had thought was "on to me" and saw that it and a third deer were standing broadside less then 20 yards in front of my stand. I thought of pulling my ACU Draw crank out and trying to silently cock my crossbow for a "two-fer" but knowing I already had one nice size doe on the ground I just watched them until they stiff legged it out of there. You can bet I will be back there sometime next week.
